The Futility of Humanism
The main political parties all stress the importance of electoral reform to help solve the major problems faced by the UK. A leaked document shows that the Labour Party thinks the House of Lords is a primary target for reform. Amongst their proposals is one to reduce the number of bishops in the House to 12, despite the fact that the current 26 bishops make up less than 4% of the members of the Lords.
Reforming the House of Lords is unlikely to improve the situation, given the failure of major policies that have arisen from the House of Commons. The UK now has the worst binge-drinking problem in Europe, demonstrating the failure of the 24-hour drinking laws introduced a few years ago. The Commons Public Accounts Committee has described the Government’s failure to evaluate the impact of more than £1 billion spent on tackling drug abuse as unacceptable. Experts are concerned that the policy has had little positive impact. And the results of sex education policies seem to be even worse, with new initiatives descending to new extremes despite statistics consistently showing an increase in teenage pregnancies.
So again there is significant evidence of the timeless nature of the truth of Scripture. Preaching from the Book of Acts, Martyn Lloyd-Jones draws out the lesson that the present age demonstrates the failure and superficiality of Humanism, with its claims that mankind can resolve their own problems. Preaching from Paul's Letter to the Ephesians, he went even further, stating that secular improvements have always come about from evangelical revivals. Thus indicating that the National Secular Society are acting against their own interests! And preaching from the Letter to the Romans, MLJ emphasizes that Christianity is not just a moral system. It is not a man-made code of behaviour, but belief in the living God who is in control of time and history.
