By Martyn Lloyd-Jones
On Saturday 16th August 1969, Martyn Lloyd-Jones and his wife, Bethan, arrived in Pensacola, Florida, about 24 hours before a much less welcome visitor was expected - Hurricane Camille!
The hurricane changed course and the conference went ahead with little disruption, allowing Dr Lloyd-Jones to preach nine sermons in the city. These sermons covered key aspects of Christianity and the challenges it faced – both then and now.
Donald Graham organised the 1969 Pensacola Theological Institute and was aware that they were introducing ‘the Doctor’ to people who knew nothing of his fame. Even so they drew a larger attendance than normal, with more than 900 attending the evening meetings.
He later wrote: ‘If I had known the treasure God had planted in this earthen vessel, I would have gone over this country and sought people to hear him from every nook and corner. A great man of God came our way only once and the largest part of the city heeded not.’
