Doctor
Martyn Lloyd-Jones

David Martyn Lloyd-Jones was born on December 20, one hundred years ago this year. He was born in South Wales but moved to London when his father's business failed. At one stage things got so bad that Martyn was thinking of leaving school early and getting a job. However, his father's business improved and he was able to stay on at school. He worked very hard and did well. Soon he was accepted at medical school where he studied to become a doctor. All these things were just a preparation for an important work that God wanted him to do. While he was working as a doctor, he was helping people with sick hearts. He became aware that God wanted him to tell people how they could have new hearts:

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take away the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. Ezekiel 11 verse 19

He realised that in the end it was going to do his patients no good to be made well if they were just going to carry on living in their sins. To be a doctor is a very important job but God was now calling him to be a preacher. This was much, much more important.

Over the next 60 years, Dr Lloyd-Jones preached to many thousands of people both in Britain and also in America. His preaching was powerful and many were forced to face up to the reality of sin and why Jesus had come to this world. His books were also very helpful to people who could not hear him preach. You can still read these books today. Many ministers were influenced and encouraged by him to preach systematically through a book of the Bible. It is important that we remember his life and give thanks to God for what he did through his servant.
